Chapter 2.  Maintenance

Installation

[Note]Note

K2 Split Content is a subscriber-only product. The initial installation cannot be done using the Install from Web functionality that was added in Joomla! 3.x. All versions of K2 Split Content after 3.0.1 support the Joomla! Update System, and updates can be applied using the Joomla! Update System.

Just like most Joomla! extensions, there are three ways to install or update K2 Split Content on your website: -

  • Install from URL
  • Upload and Install
  • Manual installation

[Note]Note

K2 Split Content ships with a single language, en-GB (English, Great Britain). We are happy to include other langauge translations. Create a thread in the forum and include the language files so they can be added to a future release.

Please keep in mind that installing and updating K2 Split Content is actually the same thing. The exception is that when you update, your configuration settings are retained.

[Important]Important

Never uninstall K2 Split Content before updating to a new version. You will lose your configuration!

Install from URL

To save you having to download the installation ZIP files and clutter up your local PC, you can install K2 Split Content directly from our website.

K2 Split Content downloads are only available to active subscribers and these instructions will not work if you do not have an active subscription.

First, go to our website and login by clicking on the My Account menu. Of course, if you're reading this documentation, you're probably already logged in. Then, hold your mouse over the My Account menu and select Latest Releases from the drop-down menu that appears. Find K2 Split Content in the list and click on the View Files button. On that page, look for the blue Download button and click the More Information button next to it. The screen should expand and you should see a DirectLink link next to the white Download button. Right click on it and select Copy link location, or whatever your browser calls it.

Now, login to your website's administrator (back-end) section. Click on Extensions, Manage link in the top menu. If you have Joomla! 3.x click on the Install from URL tab. Clear the contents of the Install URL field and paste the URL you copied from our website's download page. Then click on the Install button. Joomla! will download and install the K2 Split Content update.

If Joomla! is unable to download the package, please use one of the other installation methods described in this section of the documentation.

Upload and Install

You can download the latest installation files from the Latest Release section of our website. Please note that the latest version is always on top. If you have an older version of Joomla! or K2 please consult the requirements chapter to ensure that your Joomla! installation will support K2 Split Content.

The K2 Split Content install file contains everything you need to be able to use the module. Installing it will install everything automatically. It can also be used to upgrade K2 Split Content; just install it without uninstalling the previous release.

Whatever you do, do not extract the ZIP files!

Login to your site's administrator (back-end) section. Click on Extensions, Manage link in the top menu. If you are on Joomla! 3.x please click on the Upload Package File tab. Locate the Browse button next to the Package File (Joomla! 2.5, 3.0 and 3.1) or Extension package file (Joomla! 3.2 - 3.4) field. Locate the installation ZIP file you have previously downloaded and select it. You will be returned to the Upload page, click on the Upload and Install button. If you are on Joomla! 3.5+, you can simply drag and drop the installation ZIP file onto the drop-zone provided. After a short while, Joomla! will tell you that the component has been installed successfully.

Manual Installation

In very limited instances, Joomla! may not be able to extract the installation ZIP file. This is usually due to a poorly configured server.

Before doing anything else, you need to extract the installation ZIP file into a folder called marathon on your local PC. Then, upload the entire folder into your website's temporary directory. The result will be that there is a folder named marathon in your website's temporary directory that contains all of the ZIP package's files.

Having upload the folder into your temporary directory, click on Extensions, Manage link on the top menu. If you are on Joomla! 3.x please click on the Install from Directory tab. Locate the Install Directory edit box. It is already filled in with the absolute path to your temporary directory, for example /var/www/joomla/tmp. Please append /marathon to it. In our example, it should look something like

/var/www/joomla/tmp/marathon

. Then, click on the Install button.

[Tip]Tip

Every environment is slightly different. Please do not contact support asking for help finding the path to your temporary directory. This is a question best directed to your host!

[Warning]Warning

It is not uncommon to find that running Joomla! in a localhost environment using products such as XAMPP results in read/write issues when installing Joomla! products. This is not a failing of the product but rather of a poorly configured environment.

Before requesting support, make sure that your environment is properly configured and that you can install other Joomla! products.
